This is my absolute favourite kind of pic!fic, where the images are scribbled notes and mementos kept by the characters. I always love the way that you can sense distinct personalities though the handwriting and even the choice of paper and other writing materials.

maryavatar presents us with a scrapbook full of death threats, that Rodney has collected and carefully saved, and is showing off (rather proudly) to John. His wry commentary is delightful, as are John's reactions.

Why This Must Be Read:

This was recced in 2006 for the McKay/Beckett rec category, but that's a long time ago and I think this story deserves some fresh scrutiny. Essentially a PWP, there's so much unexpected emotion packed into it that I really hesitate to characterize it that way. One of the reasons this resonated so much with me was the undercurrent of loneliness and self-denial in the story that we sense from Rodney. Here is a man who as we know is very passionate and strong-willed, yet he's alone, and he lacks the patience and social skills to really do anything about it. It's just a glimpse into a moment of his life, but the story stayed with me just as the event stays with Rodney. The last line is particularly poignant. A brief line that explains the gist of the story:

So they reach an understanding. And it's not complicated and it's not going to end ugly because this? This is perfectly simple. Just a dim room, a bed, and two friends. Nothing more. It really is a brilliant idea.

Why this must be read:

It wasn't until they were changing planes in Portland that it really hit Rodney that he was taking Teyla with him to the very important - read: planned-his-entire-leave-around - physics conference in San Francisco.

This is a great example of a writer using the existing friendship between Rodney and Teyla and gradually developing it into someone more, making the progression seem completely naturally. Althugh Rodney is nervous about how Teyla will react to his feelings, it isn't over the top. There are also some good parts comparing Atlantis to Earth and how Rodney is no longer comfortable on Earth and in academia and Teyla experiencing the best and worst that Earth has to offer. Tora has also included some quite funny bits that against aren't over the top

Why This Must Be Read: When Daniel came back in S7, he was very much unsure of his place on SG-1 among his friends. In this lovely fic, a troubled Daniel gets both comfort and a much-needed metaphorical slap upside the head from a wise and gentle Teal'c.

Written with Julie's usual grace of wording, and with lovely insights into how the team clicks together, Out of the Loop is a marvelous snippet of time that reads just right.

Why This Must Be Read: I often felt like there should have been more fallout from the events of season eight's 'Gemini,' but lets face it, repercussions have long been the providence of fanfic, not the show.  That being said, I have rarely seen a fic touch on this theme, particularly both Jack and Sam's mistakes in judgment.  syxp's story tackles this complex idea and does so with typical aplomb.  The fic is short, but layered with great visual detail and subtle understanding of both characters, particularly the idea that body language often communicates louder than words between these two. Enjoy!

Why This Must Be Read: A year ago, Abyssis offered to write "Five Things" prompts. I asked for "five ways Teal'c and Daniel work their way past Sha're's death."

This eloquent, delicate, heartbreaking story is the result.

I love how it takes slow steps, and a span of four years, to reach the point where both forgiveness is offered and accepted. I love the team's silent support, and Daniel's drunken fury, and the aching beauty of that first anniversary. I love Teal'c's voice in this, and the gentle click of the full-circle ending to it all.

Lovely, lovely stuff. Read this one carefully, and savor.

Why This Must Be Read: This story is made of wow. You can tell, from the very beginning, that Rydra worked on this novel for months. It's not just written; it's crafted, and it is a seriously amazing piece of work.

Rydra takes us into a harrowing AU, complete with realistic shifting of storylines and stellar characterization: the events of Abyss go differently. Kanan does not leave Jack before they're captured by Ba'al, and events twist and dance away from canon as Jack's prolonged absence from the SGC creates a new reality.

Fury and frustration, and an amazing rendition of the Tok'ra; competent Sam, and an achingly-beautiful Jack and Teal'c friendship (the scene where Teal'c offers solace with silence will break your heart); the stuggle for the definition of self and honor and right and wrong. Jacob Carter and Bra'tac have marvelous cameos, as does a frustrated Ascended Daniel. Hammond is the leader we know and love, and several other minor characters - Malek of the Tok'ra, Satterfield, Pierce, and more - are brought vividly, lovingly, to life.

But most of all, this is Jack O'Neill's story. Stubborn to the last, amazingly himself. I dare you to read this and not fall in love with it.
